How I stop myself going nuts during lockdown

I been working alone for a few years now and I have got a few tricks up my sleeve to keep me sane

Looking around social media this last week I can see a few people are starting to find that special place that can come with being stuck inside

So here are 5 things I do to keep my shit from getting away from me, I notice when I stop doing these I can go a little "special".

1. GET UP AND GO TO BED AT THE SAME TIME EACH DAY

This one is crucial as it creates a routine.

I find that one or two late nights can very quickly spiral and I can find myself getting up around noon and going to bed at 3am.

Then I have a week of misery as I try to get back to a normal sleep pattern.

I tend to hit the sack around 10-10.30 and get up around 8am and this keeps my sleeping regular and stops me burning out.

ONE morning a week (after the kids have went back to their mums) I treat myself to a long lie and I watch movies or binge on youtube till 11am.

2. SHOWER AND EAT WHEN I GET UP

As soon as I get out of bed I have some breakfast and get a shower in.

Don't underestimate how doing this can make you feel human and alive.

Bonus points for trying 30 days of cold showers.

If I miss a shower I go thru the day feeling much more lethargic and less productive.

Plus there is nothing worse than wondering at 3pm if that smell is coming from me 😀

3. I TRY TO GET IN 3 X 2 HOUR WORK BLOCKS MINIMUM

Keeping myself productive and useful (and off the playstation) is crucial.

I have a place that is only for work, just a desk and a laptop - but it trains my brain that when I sit down here, I work

I work for 2 hours at a time (copyright Dan Meredith) and try to turn off the TV and anything that can beep and distract me.

I put on music and allow my brain to get into the tasks at hand

You don't have to do work either - one of those 2 hour blocks a couple times a week gets used for domestic shit.

This stops me using the excuse of tidying something up when I should be working.

After 2 hours I shoot something in the head on the playstation or get out with the dog for 30-60 mins then start again.

4. WRITE OUT ALL THE DRAMA IN MY HEAD

When I start to notice that my mood is turning dark or I am overly worrying about stuff I write it all down.

Get a piece of paper and write down every dark and shitty thought you can.

Don't worry about it making sense, just get it out of your head.

I got this from Laura Powner and it helps keep my brain on the happy side and stops me running away into that special place.

I don't know the science around it and don't care - I know it works.

If you are there now - do this every morning for a week or so and see the difference it makes.

Once you have written out all the shit, rip it up and put it in the bin and forget about it.

5. GET ON ZOOM AND TALK TO REAL PEOPLE

All else fails and I feel like I could put an axe thru a door and go all "here's Johnny" I reach ouyt to people and get on a zoom chat.

In the last week I have defo done this.

Helps me massively and lets you get some form of connection in - especially if you are in the house yourself.

Do this and keep in contact with your family and friends.

There is more that you can do to keep your shit together.

Keep alcohol to a minumum, eat healthy and stop binging on caffeine for one.

But these 5 things are what I turn to when I feel the pain of being stuck in the house.

Good luck and reach out if you need it
